Roy was the fourth of six children of Robert Tabor Thomas (born in Gloucestershire, UK) and Winifred Elvira Malone (daughter of a British Army Officer, born at sea in the Bay of Biscay) who lived in Gloucestershire UK
Roy was in Brisbane, QLD in 1899 when he enlisted with 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry in the Boer War. WIA in 1900, Roy was Discharged in October that year (Murray p 51), and returned to Brisbane, QLD
In 1903, Roy married Margaret Cockburn Barrowman in 1903 in Gympie, QLD and moved to Brisbane where he worked as a Drill Instructor.
By 1930, Roy and Margaret were living in Woy Woy, New South Wales where Roy worked as a Jeweller until 1949 when they moved to Parkes in NSW and Roy was working as a Machinist.
Roy died in Brisbane, QLD in 1952.
Roy's older brother Percy George Tabor also immigrated to Brisbane, QLD and served with the AIF from 1917 to 1919. Roy's nephew, also Percy George, served from 1913 with 1st Parachute Battalion
Roy's son (also Roy Tabor Thomas) served in the Australian Army - Area Officer in Toowoomba, QLD in 1920, and in Ipswich and Brisbane, QLD until 1939

Personal- After 18 years' service in the Defence Department Lieutenant R. T. Thomas has been awarded the permanent long service and good conduct medal. Lieutenant Thomas began his military career at Gympie in 1899 in B Company, 2nd Regiment, Q.D.F., of which Captain C. B. Steels was at the time commanding officer. In the same year he joined the first Queensland mounted force which left the state for South Africa, Colonel D. E. Reid, D.S.O., then Captain Reid, being the officer in command, and Major-General Glasgow, then Lieutenant Glasgow, also one of the officers. He joined the permanent staff in 1907, and, after serving in various parts of Australia, was transferred to Gympie as adjutant and quarter-master of the 5th light Horse Regiment.
