Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Victor Emanuel Thompson served twice in the South African (Boer) War and again in WW2 (home service). First service was as a Bugler S.N. 192, 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer war. Second service was as a Private S.N. 686, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (2nd Draft), Boer war. Third service was as a Lance Sergeant S.N. Q89137, 1 MD District Accounts Office (Qld) AIF, WW2 (home service).
When he joined the 4th QIB in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 19 May 1900, he noted his N.O.K. as J. B. Thompson, baker, Palmerin St, Warwick. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 4th QMI, Bk 5 p. 5, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Jas. B. Thompson, Palmerin St, Warwick. He served the full tour of the 4th QIB and returned to Brisbane for discharge on 13 Aug 1901.
Very soon after he was selected in the Second Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Sep 1901. All but one of the members of the draft had served previously in either the 3rd QMI or 4th QIB contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.
Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB. He is however, recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 127, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to his brother Henry James Thompson, Albion St, Warwick. Members of the draft remained breifly in South Africa on extended service after the 5th and 6th QIB contingents returned to Australia. The service paybooks notes he returned to Australia and was discharged in Brisbane on 9 Aug 1902.
He enlisted again on 1 Jul 1941 for WW2 and was selected for home service in the District Accounts Office (Qld). On his Attestation Form he had changed his date of birth to 5 Dec 1891 to lower his age to 49 years 6 months. Had he used his actual birthdate it would have been evident he was 59 years 6 months old. He also noted on his attestation that he was born at Stanthorpe, he was married and a storekeeper, and his N.O.K. was his wife Maud Thompson, North Tambourine.
Victor Emanuel Thompson was born on 5 Dec 1882 at Stanthorpe, a son to James Brine Thompson and Paulina Thompson (nee Link). He married Maud Evelyn Hallas on 14 Sep 1912 at Gatton and they had one child.
