Son of Charles Frederick Olley and Alice Olley nee Leggett of London, England.

On 13 September 1903 Ernest married Ethel Margaret Smith in Stockwell Green, St Andrew, England. Later of Blenheim Street, Balaclava, Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia on 2 January 1919 aboard HS Aeneas as nursing staff disembarking on 5 February 1919
