Note- whilst the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll compiled by Murray records him as Walter Walsh for both his services in the Boer War, his full name was Walter Martin Walsh.
Walter Walsh served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 10 in the 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Sergeant S.N. 1909 in the 3rd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
When he first enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private W. Walsh, single, East St, Valley, Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 119, it is noted he was invalided to England where after recovery he returned to Brisbane where he was discharged on 14 Feb 1901. The paybooks note his address post discharge as c/- Mrs. Greasley (his mother), East St., Valley.
He enlisted again in 1902 with the 3rd BACH and on his Attestation paper, dated 5 Feb 1902, it was noted that; he was born at Maryborough and was 21 years 2 months of age; he was single and a labourer; his N.O.K. was his mother Mrs. Greasley, East St, Valley, Brisbane; and he had previously served with the 1st QMI.
Walter (Martin) Walsh was born on 2 May 1881 at Maryborough, a son to Martin Walsh and Catherine Ryan Walsh (nee Dovey). His father had passed in 1886 and his mother remarried in 1897 to John Greasley. He married Mary Ann Shannon on 4 Jul 1910 in Queensland and they had 3 children. In 1926 they were living at Warry St, Fortitude Valley, and Walter was working as a Tramway Motorman. By 1928 they had relocated to Mott St, Gaythorne.
