Son of George and Margaret Banes of Fairy Street, Warrnambool, Victoria
1509 Pte G Baines, 6th Battalion (3rd Reinforcement Group). Labourer, single, born in 1868, the eldest son of George and Margaret (Culleton) Baines, his widowed mother was living in Warrnambool at the time of his death [George 1869, Catherine Mary 1877, John 1881]. He was educated at the Warrnambool State School, and was working as a horse trainer and farm worker at the time of his enlistment on 16th December 1914, his Attestation Papers stated he was 42½ years of age, in fact he was 46. He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A54 Runic on 19th February 1915, and was killed in action at the Battle of Krithia on 8th May 1915, his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, and the Warrnambool RSL Roll of Honour.
The Warrnambool Standard of Thursday 24 June 1915 reported his death: “PRIVATE GEORGE BAINES. The mournful news was yesterday received by his mother, Mrs Baines, of Fairy Street, Warrnambool, that her eldest son, Private George Baines, had been killed in action in the Gallipoli Peninsula. He was employed for some years with the late Mr. Thwaites, dentist, and left Warrnambool some years ago. He enlisted in St. Arnaud, and left Victoria with the 6th Battalion 2nd Brigade 3rd Reinforcements. Deceased was well-known in St. Arnaud, having worked here as a baker some years ago. He was a brother of Mrs. Owen, who received the sad news on Thursday last. He had many friends in this town, and much sympathy will be felt with the bereaved family.”
