John was the youngest of eight children of John Worral (born 1840 in Yorkshire, England) and Martha Butler (born 1846 in Warwickshire, England). John was one year old when his mother died in 1884 in Bundaberg, QLD

Born in Gympie in QLD, John was 17 years of age when he enlisted in the 4th QLD Imperial Bushmen (Service No: 37) in Gympie and fought in the boer War in Free State, the Battle of Rhenoster Kop, the De Wet Hunt and the advance on Pietersberg. He joined the South Africa Light Horse in July 1901 (Service No: 2463) until February 1902. John knew Breaker Morant, having met him in the Bouilia Creek district prior to the War.

John had a lifelong love of horses, and was working as a Stockman when he married Lavinia Gertrude Wilson (born 1885 in Toowoomba, QLD) in 1908 in Toowoomba, QLD. Daughter Jacqueline was born in Rockhampton, QLD in 1911, and in 1915 the family was living in Brisbane, QLD where John was a Shopkeeper.

John and Lavinia were living in Wynnum, QLD and John was working as a Stockman in Roma, QLD when he enlisted in 1916 in the AIF, serving as a Private with 7th Reinforcements 7 Machine Gun Co (Service No: 493) and 2nd Machine Gun Battalion. John was Discharged in 1919.

Following WWI, John and his family lived in Toowoomba, QLD where John was a Drover. He died in Brisbane, QLD in 1947
