STUART, WILLIAM GEORGE RAYMOND
B. SA 16 Mar 1893 Semaphore, SA enlisted WW1 16th Battalion.
He moved from South Australia to Western Australia after 1925.
On 23 June 1941 Stuart enlisted AIF from 16th Battalion Militia and joined 2/4th's 'D' Company 14 Platoon initially. When an additional Platoon was created in Singapore, Stuart was moved to this new Platoon 16.
The Machine Gunners dug into the beaches of north west Singapore - right in the Japanese Army invasion route. They were hopelessly outnumbered and soon overrun.
He was KIA 9 February 1942 during the Battle for Singapore, at 14 mile peg Lim Chu Kang Road. It is believed he recorded his enlistment age being born 1904. When he died he was in fact 49 years old and not 38 years as is recorded on his headstone at Singapore!
