Alfred’s unit, the 12th Battalion, embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT Morea on 26 August 1915 bound for Gallipoli where he served until late in the year. He was attached to the 1st Anzac workshops in November 1916 and rejoined his unit in France on 13 May 1917. Alfred was appointed Lance Corporal on 30 October. During action on 25 April 1918 he was shot in the left buttock and admitted to Southern General Hospital, Oxford, England. On 29 August Alfred returned to his unit in France until being sent to Sutton Veny, England prior to returning to Australia on the Warwickshire on 24 May 1919 and discharged on 19 July.
