Arthur Leslie Walters
Arthur Leslie Walters was still living with his mother, Mrs Annie Walters who lived in North Adelaide and was a Methodist Clerk. On the 4th of August 1915 he enlisted and his rank was private. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 12 January 1916 and his AWM embarkation roll number was 23/44/2. He was 20 years old at this time. His regimental number was 3294 and he was in the 27th battalion and the 7th reinforcement.
The 27th Battalion was raised in South Australia in March 1915, and was predominantly made up of people from Adelaide, including Arthur. The 27th battalion left Australia in June and spent two months training in Egypt, and then landed in Gallipoli on 12 September. When they got to Gallipoli, the 27th they weren’t heavily involved and departed the peninsula in December, and only had few casualties. The 27th Battalion went into the front line, trenches for the first time on 7 April 1916 and took part in its first main battles at Pozieres on 28th of July to 5th of August. The 27th Battalion took part in two attacks to the east of Flers in the Somme Valley, both which they fought in the mud. Arthur died before their victory
Arthur Leslie Walters was killed in action at 23 years old, and was left on Mount St. Quentin, at around 9 am, he was shot instantaneously in the stomach and died instantly and was then hit by a shell. His body was found that night by people in his battalion, on 2 September 1918, buried in the unicorn cemetery (plot IV, row B, grave 6) medic Vendhuile, France. Arthur was awarded the war medal, and victory medal, Arthur Leslie Walters' name is located at 111 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial. Some people who knew Arthur say he was young, short and a popular lad.
