    2 Oct 1915: Transferred Trooper, 5th Light Horse Regiment, John temporarily transferred to D Squadron, 5th Light Horse regiment for service on Gallipoli with his brother, William Francis McGrath.

    22 Feb 1916: Transferred Trooper, 11th Light Horse Regiment, After service on Gallipoli he transferred back to the 11th Light Horse Regiment.
    19 Apr 1917: Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, Egypt and Palestine - Light Horse and AFC Operations, 'For conspicuous skill and devotion to duty at KHIRBET SIHAN on 19th April 1917 in pluckily rescuing from an exposed position, under fire, a Hotchkiss rifle after the whole of its team had been killed or wounded.'

    1 Jul 1918: Transferred Lance Corporal, 14th Light Horse Regiment, Alongside his brothers and the rest of the 1st battalion ICC they were the Nucellus for the newly formed 14th light horse regiment where they would fight in the Battle of Megiddo and the final push through Palestine.
