2 Oct 1915: Transferred Trooper, 5th Light Horse Regiment, John temporarily transferred to D Squadron, 5th Light Horse regiment for service on Gallipoli with his brother, William Francis McGrath.

19 Apr 1917: Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, Egypt and Palestine - Light Horse and AFC Operations, 'For conspicuous skill and devotion to duty at KHIRBET SIHAN on 19th April 1917 in pluckily rescuing from an exposed position, under fire, a Hotchkiss rifle after the whole of its team had been killed or wounded.'
