Dr Alexander Horn of Toowoomba, Queensland was granted a Commission with the rank of Lt. Col. and assigned to the 4th Australian Light Horse Field Ambulance, and later appointed Commanding Officer of the 15th Australian Field Ambulance.
He embarked on the "HMAT A30 Borda" for Alexandria, Egypt on 16th June 1915, and then on 19th June 1916 embarrked aboard the "HMT Royal George" for Marseilles, France. Three weeks after their arrival in France, the 15th Australian Field Ambulance played their part in the battle of Fromelles. Lt. Col. Horn was Mentioned in Despatches by Sir Douglas Haig on 13 Nov 1916, (published London Gazette 4 Jan 1917).
Lt. Col Horn was also reccommeded for the award of Italian Cavalier of the Military Order of Savoy, however there is no record to indicate that this honour was granted. Dr Horn was medically discharged from service in London in May 1917.
Returning to his home in Toowoomba, Dr. Horn served his local community as a General Practioner until his retirement.
He died in 1973 aged 92 years.
