"... his body being discovered entangled in a snag just under the surface of the water. Struck by a falling branch from a Spruce in the bush near Pemberton, Ernest Kern, an employee of the State Sawmills, was injured so seriously that he died in the Pemberton Hospital shortly after being admitted. Kern's brother, who was working with him, was struck by the same limb but escaped injury.

It appears that another person enlisted under the same name in WW2 W243499 and giving same birth details, but Ernest had already died by this time.  The true identity of this person is unknown and notes on pages 5 and 7 of the war records show that this was brought to the attention of authorities.
