Corporal Mervyn Edward Gibbs (Service Nos:WX9833/59261) enlisted in the Australian Army on 6 December 1940. Corporal Gibbs was attached to 2/48 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged on 4 July 1948. He then re-enlisted, serving until the early 1980s.

Born in 1916 in Canning WA, Mervyn was the fourth of eleven children of Louis John Gibbs (b1886 in Canning, WA) and Edna (Kate) Kathleen Weir (b1888 in Milparinka, NSW). Louis (a Civil Servant) and Kate married in 1908 in Perth WA. Following Kate's death in 1930, Louis remarried and lived in Perth WA.

Mervyn worked as a Labourer and Bricklayer in Perth WA and in 1941 married Joan Mary Jewell (b1919 in Perth, WA). Mervyn and Joan settled in Perth WA where Mervyn served in the Australian Army until retirement in the early 1980s. Mervyn died in 2002 and Joan in 2016
