Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Thomas was the son of Thomas William and Elizabeth Smith, of West Townsville, Queensland.
His younger brother, 5669 Pte. William Smith 26th Battalion AIF was killed in action on 26 March 1917, aged 26.
Thomas enlisted in January 1915 with the 9th Battalion and arrived on Gallipoli on 10 July 1915.
Only one witness to his death in his Red Cross Wounded and Missing file. “On October 1st, 1915, at the right flank of the Anzac position, Pte. Smith was killed on an “ordinary day” in the trenches. He was shot in the head by a bullet and died in the trench about an hour afterwards. He was buried in the battalion burying ground, ‘Shrapnel Green’-near the sea, the same day.” 1986 Pte. A. McDonald 9th Battalion AIF.
