Corporal Ronald Gwynne (Service No:WX10423) enlisted in the AIF on 20 December 1940 as a Private attached to 2 Infantry Training Battalion, and was attached to 2nd/48th Battalion on 5 July 1941 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for the Middle East on board HMAT Aquitania. Private Gwynne was WiA - crush wound to chest - at El Alamein on 10 July 1942, and embarked from Port Tewfik, Suez for Fremantle on 1 February 1943 on board HMT Nieuw Amsterdam. Corporal Gwynne then embarked from Cairns for Milne Bay on 5 August 1943 on board USS Henry T Allen, returning ex Port Moresby for Brisbane on 18 February 1944 on board USAT Etolin. Corporal Gwynne was attached to 2nd/48 Battalion at Discharge on 12 October 1945. Younger sister Marie (Private; Service No:WF96342) served in the AWAS and younger brother Victor (Private; Service No:WX500024) served with the Line Construction Project Squadron.
Ron was born in Woodanilling via Katanning, Western Australia in 1918, eldest of three children of Spencer Gwynne DCM, MiD (b1891 in Eurelia, South Australia) and Florence Mary Dival (b1898 in Hampshire, England). Florence had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1911, arriving in Fremantle on board the Omrah and Spencer had moved to the Western Australian Goldfields in the early 1900s. Spencer was a Farmer in Woodanilling in 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF (Lieutenant; Service No:413), and he and Flornence married in 1920 in Woodanilling, where they settled and raised their family and Spencer was Secretary of the Woodanilling Road Board, and in the 1930s was Secretary of the Mingenew Road Board. By the late 1930s, the family had moved to Armadale, where Spencer was Secretary of the Armadale Road Board and served with the ACMF (Lieutenant; Service No:W7851). Spencer served his local community as Member of the RSL, Hospital Association, and Parents and Citizens Association, and as Captain and Manager of the cricket team.
Ron was a Clerk in Armadale when he enlisted in the Army in 1940, and in 1945 in Armadale, married Ella Joan Devereux (b1920 in Boddington, Western Australia) - Ella was working as a Shop Assistant in Armadale. Following his Discharge from the Army in October 1945, Ron and Ella lived in Cuballing, Marradong and Boddington, where they raised their family and Ron was Secretary of the Road Boards. Ron and Ella lived in Mt Barker in the mid 1950s, where Ron was a Carrier, before returning to Boddington as Road Board Secretary in 1958. Ron and Ella moved to Belmont in the 1960s, where Ron was a Farmer and, following Ellas death in 1972, Ron was Proprietor of the Tammin Hotel. Ron died in 2008.
