Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Military Medal

'On the night of 2nd/3rd September at HERBECOURT near PERONNE, Sapper Lenegan was detailed in charge of a party to lay and maintain a telephone from an Advanced Exchange to the Artillery Brigade Headquarters. he and the party were subjected to very heavy shellfire, both his horses being killed and limbers smashed. Sapper Lenegan supervised the whole of the work and maintained the line under very heavy shellfire for several hours, thus keeping the Brigade in communication through the whole period, a most important feat considering the close artillery support the Infantry required. By his gallantry, coolness, and devotion to duty, he set a fine example.'
