Ernest Thomas LAKEY (Service Number 1768) was born in Sydney on 31st March 1896. he was educated at Granville Public School.
He joined the NSW Governemtn Railways as a shop boy at Eveleigh workshops in December 1911. In 1913 he was promoted to cleaner, which is the first step on the career path of an engineman. In February 1915 he enlisted in the AIF at Liverpool.
He was allotted to the 4th Reinforcements of the 3rd Battalion. He was embarked from Sydney in March 1915. He was ‘taken on strength’ by the 3rd Battalion on 31st May and sent to Gallipoli.
He was killed in action between 7th and 12th August 1915.
He was believed to have been buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery, although his actual grave is unknown. He is remembered with honour there.
