Alfred was born on 9th June 1890 i in 6 Albert Street, Bromley-by -Bow in the Registration District of Poplar, London to  James Kelley, a Stoker on a Steam Ship and Mary Ann Kelley, nee Walker.

In 1921, his father was living at 43 Quebec Buildings, Poplar, London E.14.

He attested as Alfred Kelley and stated he had served 3 years in the British Army [Lancashire Fusiliers] –time expired.
