Frank Brown Chattell was born at Great Catworth, Huntingdonshire in 1883.

Frank Chattell, a 27 year old Mechanic, was listed as a passenger on Salamis which left the port of London & arrived in Sydney, NSW on 23rd November, 1910.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 28th June, 1916 in Brisbane, Queensland as a 32 year old, single, Labourer from Casino, NSW.

Private Chattell was admitted to 13th Australian General Hospital on 14th August, 1916 (while in Camp in Australia) with Bronchitis & discharged on 18th August, 1916.

Private Frank Brown Chattell embarked from Sydney on HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 7th October, 1916 with 6th Reinforcements of 52nd Infantry Battalion & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 21st November, 1916 where he would receive further training before being sent to the War Front.

Private Chattell proceeded overseas to France from 13th Training Battalion on 8th February, 1917 & joined 52nd Battalion at the Front on 13th February, 1917.
Private Chattell proceeded on detachment from 52nd Battalion to Y.M.C.A. on 20th December, 1917. He was on Leave to UK from 1st February, 1918 & rejoined his Unit from leave on 20th February, 1918.

Private Frank Brown Chattell was transferred to 49th Battalion from 52nd Battalion on 18th May, 1918.

Private Chattell was admitted to Field Ambulance on 10th August, 1918 – cause not determined. He rejoined 49th Battalion on 13th August, 1918 & was detached to 13th A.I.B.D. Y.M.C.A.

Private Frank Chattell was on leave to UK from 22nd November, 1918 to 10th December, 1918. He rejoined YMCA on 15th January, 1919 & rejoined his Battalion from detachment on 16th April, 1919.

Private Chattell was admitted to Casualty Clearing Station on 5th May, 1919 with Bronchitis. He was invalided to England & admitted to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, Kent, England on 26th May, 1919 suffering from chronic bronchitis & emphysema. He was reported dangerously ill on 4th June, 1919.

Private Frank Brown Chattell died at 08.10 hrs on 4th June, 1919 at 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, Kent, England from Pneumonia, however Army Form A. 27 “Morning State of Sick” reported the cause of death as Chronic Bronchitis & Emphysema.


Private Frank Brown Chattell was buried in Mexborough Cemetery, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, England.

From the burial report: The deceased soldier was interred privately by relatives residing in Mexboro, Yorkshire…... A large number of relatives & friends were at the graveside: - Father & Mother, 3 Brothers, 3 Sisters-in-law, 2 Sisters, 2 Brothers-in-law. Niece & Nephew and Representatives from Discharged Sailors & Soldiers Association. Headquarters, A.I.F. London were represented at the funeral.
