John Joseph O'Brien was born in August of 1887. He was born in Farell Flat, and grew up in Burra. John lived in Burra with his sister Mary Ann and brother Terence. Prior to enlisting John worked as a labourer and did so until he enlisted on the 30th of September 1916 at the age of 29 years and 1 month.

According to John’s medical examination paper he was, 29 years and 1 month old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighed 135lbs (61kg). John’s complexion was described as ‘medium’, he also had blue eyes, and brown hair.  

On the 10th of February 1917 John Joseph O’Brien embarked from Australia on the ship ‘Seang Bee’, John landed in Devonport England on the 2nd of May 1917. 

He served on the front line in Flanders Field France. John luckily only had one major injury, which was a severe gunshot wound on his left forearm. He was wounded on the 12th of October 1917, in battle. He was transported to a hospital in England on the 19th of October 1917. He stayed in hospital until 27th of December 1917, he stayed in hospital for about 2-3 months. He was then transported back to France on the same day, 27th of December 1917.
