Luther was the 6th of 8 children of John Richards and Louisa Ellen Lancaster. He was a School Teacher in outback QLD, married to Ellen Alexander Marshall McKeown, when he enlisted in the RAAF on 12 February 1942. Luther was a Flight Lieutenant (Service No: 274713) with 56 PTC/O & ARP and took his Discharge on 7 November 1945.
Luther returned to Teaching in QLD until his retirement in 1968
Luther's eldest brother Ernest Morgan Richards served in the Army in WWI and WWII. Brother Mervyn Rogers Lancaster Richards died at sea returning to Australia from fighting in Egypt in 1919. Brother - in - Law James Roy Dobbie served in WWII
