Previous Military Service-WWI.He had served three and a half years in the British Royal Navy [1915-1919] and his rank on leaving was Petty Officer, 2nd Class. He also served in the Mercantil Marine

He is one of three Australian soldiers of WWII who survived the war but who are remembered on the St. John’s, Newcastle, Roll of Honour in Northern Ireland.
