William Ronald Birrell was the son of William Herbert Birrell (born in Paddington, NSW) and Mary Alice Young. Father William had served in the AIF in WWI in the 7th Infantry Battalion in Gallipoli and France, was wounded on several occasions and Killed in Action in Belgium on 13 October 1917. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 18 May 1915).
Bill enlisted with the Militia on 14 February 1934 and served with 52 Battalion (Service No: 333770). He married Marjorie Robertson in 1938 in Victoria and enlisted in the Australian Army 37 Battalion (Service No: VX26334), serving with Australian Army Records Staff (1946) and 6 Australian Advanced 2 Echelon (Commonwealth Occupation Force) in Japan.
Following his Discharge in 1947, Bill returned to Victoria where he lived and worked as a School Teacher until his death in 1977.
