Alfred was born and raised in North East Victoria. He was the eldest of nine children. He left home at the age of twelve and during his life he had a number of occupations, including; Painter, Royal Australian Airforce, Manager of Edrom Lodge, Eden, N.S.W. and the Victoria Police Force and nominee of the Court House Hotel in Brunswick, Melbourne.

Alfred married Jeanette Dunn and they had two children. During most of his life they lived in Victoria, apart from the years at Eden, N.S.W.
