Cosmo, born in 1922 in Scottsdale, Tasmania, was the second of seven children of Cosmo Mcausland Colquhoun Whish - Wilson (born 1890 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Helena Mary Crole (born 1898 in Bunbury, Western Australia). Father Cosmo was a Farmer, and older brother Frederick (born in 1920) served as a Sapper (Service No: T6595) in WWII with the Australian Army.

Cosmo was a Farm Labourer at Roger River in Darwin, Tasmania when he enlisted in Hobart Tasmania in the RAAF in 1941. Following his Discharge in 1945, Cosmo returned to farming at Roger River in Tasmania

In 1955, Cosmo married Vera Dorothy Clough, a Stenographer living and working in Brisbane, QLD. They moved to Toowoomba, in the Darling Downs in QLD where Cosmo worked as a Fencing Contractor. He died in Toowoomba, QLD in 2008
