Biography contributed by Vicki Worland

Son of William Arthur Halsall and Anastasia Withers.

Joined the 58th Infantry Battalion ( Euroa Coy) on 28 Nov 1939. He was transferred to the 39th Battalion , when this unit was formed for service in the South Pacific area in October 1941. He sailed for New Ginea on Boxing Day 1941 and served as a signaller and despatch rider throughout the Papuan Campaign. This Unit was the first to engage the Japanese at Buna then near Kokoda, an action which was to prove the beginning of the Japanese retreat from their thrust towards Australia. They pioneered the Kokoda Trail- the Impossible Trail it was called- over the Owen Stanley Ranges and were one of the most highly decorated units in the Papuan Campaign, receiving the maximum number of battle honours from the Queen. The 39th was later disbanded and Ron completed his service in the Engineers workshops.
