John Edward (Eddie) was the son of Arthur Edward Crane (born 1891 in Georgetown, QLD) and Alice Ann Cleland (born 1902 in Clermont, QLD). Arthur and Alice married in 1920 and settled in Cairns, QLD to raise their family. Initially a Labourer, Arthur worked as a Bookmaker from 1920 - moving to Brisbane following Ann's death in 1940.

Eddie was in Cairns, QLD when he enlisted, serving with 2.137 A Brigade Workshop as a Private IService Nos: NX192124/N437822/Q153470). He was Discharged in August 1946.

Older brother Arthur George served with 2/2 Machine Gun Battalion as a Private (Service No: QX15063), and younger brother Gordon Thomas served with the RAN (HMAS Cerberus, Albatross, Sydney, Penguin) from 1951 to 1957 (Service No: R46372).

Following his Discharge, Eddie worked briefly in townsville, QLD for the PMG and in 1950 in Brisbane, QLD he married Eva Isabel Moore (born 1917 in Cairns, QLD).

Eddie and Eva settled in Brisbane, QLD where Eddie was a 'Wharfie, Boxer and ALP stalwart'. He died in 1994 and Eva in 1995.

'His many mates knew that one of his proudest possessions was the battered old (slouch) hat thet he wore everywhere, even in hospital during his final days'.
