Ivan was the second of five children of Clifford Vincent Campbell (born 1890 in Clare, South Australia) and Dulcie Ginbey (born 1888 in Broken Hill, NSW), Cliff and Dulcie married at Boulder, WA in 1910 -  Cliff was employed in mining (a Battery Hand, Mill Hand, Miner and Engine Driver).

Ivan served with 462 Squadron - formed at Fayid, Egypt on 6 September 1942. Relocating to Solluch in Libya in 1943, the Squadron's mission was to attack harbours and shipping in Sicily. 462 Squadron ceased to exist on 1 March 1944, and was reformed in August to bomb targets in France and Germany. The Squadron then joined the specialist 100 Group to conduct diversionary raids to disrupt the German air defence system. The Squadron's last operation was flown on the night of  2 - 3 May 1945, and it was then involved in a transport role, including the repatriation of Allied prisoners from Europe. Ivan worked as a Secretary in Fremantle, WA, where in 1983 he married Ethel O'Conner (born in 1914). Ivan and Ethel settled in Fremantle and in November 1941, harold enlisted in the RAAF. He served with 462 Squadron as a Flying Officer (Service No: 415506) and was Discharged in February 1946.

He returned to work as a Secretary, and he and Ethel lived in Mount Hawthorn in Parth and In Fremantle, where Ivan died in 1997 and Ethel in 2006
