Fred was the ninth of ten children of James Garden (born 1864 in Scotland) and Jane Drysdale McLean (born 1865 in Scotland). James, a Carter, and Jane married in Sydney, NSW in 1891 and moved to Fremantle in Western Australia in 1893.

Fred, a Shop Assistant in Perth, WA, married Kathleen Davies Edwards (born 1906 in Coolgardie in WA) in Fremantle in 1933. Kathleen was a Sales Assistant in Claremont when she and Fred met. Fred enlisted in the Army in July 1942 and was a Warrant Officer with 16 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in January 1946. Two of Fred's older brother served in WWI - Private Charles (Charlie) Walker Garden (Service No: 6330) was KiA in 1917, and Private George McLean Garden (Service No: 4204). Five of Fred's Brothers-in-Law served in WWII - Leading Aircraftman Robert Moysey (Service No: 82673); Flight Lieutenant Leslie Booth (Service No: 267435); Corporal Garland Edwards (Service No: WX27391); Flight Lieutenant Cecil Edwards (Service No: 8816); and Captain Stephen Kellow (Service No: W237399).

Following his Discharge in 1946, Fred and Kathleen lived in Claremont and Swanbourne (near Fremantle) in WA and Fred was a Shop Assistant. He died in 1994 and Kathleen in 2000.
