Ernest was the eldest of two children of Ernest George McTaggart (born 1890 in Williamstown, Victoria) and Dorothy Irene Burn (born 1894 in Queenscliffe, Victoria). Ernest Snr and Dorothy married in 1914 at Flemington in Melbourne, Victoria, where Ernest was a Jockey. Dorothy died in 1936 and Ernest snr worked as a Stevedore in Maelbourne until his death in 1952.

Ernest Jn worked in Gladstone in QLD as a Labourer before moving to Brisbane where he married Audrey Christina Field (born 1916 in Brisbane, QLD) in 1937. Ernest, working as a Metal Band Sawyer,  and Audrey were in Melbourne, Victoria in May 1943when Ernest enlisted in the RAAF. He served as a Flight Rigger and Leading Aircraftman (Service No: 142086) with 37 and 34 Squadrons and was Discharged in February 1946. Brother-in-Law, Sapper William Armistice Field (Service No: QX21357) served in the Army in WWII.

Ernest and Audrey settled in Red Hill in Brisbane, QLD following Ernest's Discharge, and he worked initialyy as a Sawyer, and then as a Waterside Worker (Wharfie) until Audrey's death in 1951. 

Ernest moved back to Melbourne, Victoria and married Valda June Quin (nee Venville born in 1927 in Melbourne, Victoria). Ernest and Valda lived at Heidelberg in Victoria - Valda died in 1977 and Ernest in 1988.
