George was the youngest of six children of George Duncan (born 1867 in Collingwood, Victoria) and Mary Eliza Josephine Shanahan (born 1866 at Ararat, Victoria). George Snr, a Labourer) and Mary married in Melbourne, Victoria in 1899. They raised their family at Northcote, where George Snr died in 1912.
George, a Mechanic in Melbourne, Victoria, married Eunice Millicent Laura Horne (born 1906 in Collingwood, Victoria) in 1932. In 1937 George and Eunice were living at Glen Huntley, south of Melbourne's CBD, where George was a Garage Proprietor. By 1942 they were living in the Melbourne suburb of Fern Tree Gully and George was working as a Bricklayer.
George enlisted in the RAAF in 1943, serving as a Leading Aircraftman (Service No: 145145), and was with 1 Aircraft Depot when he was Discharged in January 1946. Three of his Gannaway cousins also served in WWII - William Duncan (Service No: VX56936), Leonard Albet (Service Nos: V13411/VX60159), and Alexander William John (Service Nos: VX21202/VX52676).
George and Eunice settled in the Gippsland region of Victoria where Eunice died in 1968 and George in 1980, George worked as a Bricklayer.
