Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

John was the second of five children of William Grainger (born 1879 in Glasgow, Scotland) and Edith Wilcock (born 1868 in Yorkshire, England). William - a House Painter - and Edith - married in Ipswich QLD in 1906 and raised their family there until moving to Manly, QLD in the late 1920's. William served in WWI as a Private (Service No:1076).

John started work in Ipswich, QLD as a Labourer before working with his father as a Hosue Painter. He married Charlotte Fowler McGregor (born 1911 in Brisbane, QLD) in 1937, and served in the CMF (49th and 26th Battalions) and the RANR (Band) before enlisting with the RAAF in 1940. John was a Cook with the RAAF, and was a Flight Sergeant when he was Discharged in November 1945. Younger brother William Robert (Service No:QX4526) also served in WWII.

John and Charlotte settled at Manly in QLD where John was a House Painter until 1960, when he worked as a Steward. John and Charlotte died in 2001.
