Hazel was the eldest daughter of Sydney James Grigg (born 1898 in Coolgardie, WA) and Mary Catherine Higgins (born 1899 at Burwood in NSW). Sydney and Mary married at Ardelthan in NSW in 1923 and settled at Leeton where Sydney was a Farmer until 1945 when they moved to Bulli at Kembla in NSW. Both Sydney and Mary were Storekeepers.

Hazel worked on the family farm in Leeton, NSW until she enlisted in the RAAF in June 1945, serving as an Aircraftwoman (Service No:178132) until her Discharge in September 1946. 

Hazel married Robert William Baynes at Randwick in Sydney, NSW in 1948 - Robert had served in the RAN as an Able Seaman (Service No:24974) from 1941 until his Discharge in February 1947.

Hazel and Robert - a Carpenter - lived in Maroubra,  Cronulla and Caringbah in NSW where Robert was a Builder and a Supervisor. Hazel died in 2007 and Robert in 2013.
