Harold was the youngest of seven children of Harold Jeffries Ward (born Purcell in 1882 at Armidale in NSW and adopted by John and Sarah Ward of Uralla, NSW) and Mary Jane Dimmock (born 1886 at Walcha, NSW). Harold Snr and Mary married at Walcha, NSW in 1905 and lived at Murrurundi, Mudgee and Tamworth where Harold Snr was a Labourer. The family moved to Charlestown in the Hunter Region of NSW in 1920, and Harold worked there as an Ambulance Officer.
Harold Jnr was a Painter at Belmont in Charlestown, NSW when he married Alice Mary Louisa Grimwood (born 1919 in Ipswich, QLD) in November 1942. In May 1943 Harold enlisted in the Australian Army (Service Nos:NX171001/N286733) and served as a Driver with 2/156 Australian General Transport Coy. He was Discharged in December 1945. Brother-in-Law Joseph Redvers Grimwood (Service No:NX25502) served with the Australian Army and died in 1945 at Sandakan PoW Camp in Borneo.
Following his Discharge, Harold and Alice settled at Belmont in NSW, where Harold worked as a Painter until his death in 1983.
