MUECKE Francis Frederick, CBE MB BS FRCS
1879-1945
Francis Frederick Muecke was born in Adelaide on 6th December 1879. He was the son of the Honourable Hugo Carl Emil Muecke and Margaret Julia Elizabeth, nee Le Page. His father was a Member of Parliament and German Consul in South Australia. He was educated at the Queen’s School and Prince Alfred College. He studied medicine at the University of Adelaide graduating in 1901. He spent a year at the Adelaide Hospital as a resident medical officer before moving to England and joining The London Hospital in 1903. Muecke, on 11th April 1905, married renowned singer Ada Jemima Crossley, who was born in Tarraville, Victoria. Ada Crossley had received wide acclaim in England and was commanded to sing for Queen Victoria five times in a two year period.
Muecke joined the RAMC in 1914 at the rank of lieutenant and was present at the Suvla landing and took part in the big offensives in France. He was promoted temporary captain in 1917. He was later transferred to the Royal Air Force, which was formed as a separate service on 1st April 1918, as a temporary lieutenant colonel in 1919. He was Mentioned in Despatches and appointed CBE for gallantry
Muecke continued to work in London after the war and rose to be one of the leading consultant ear, nose and throat specialists in England. Ada Crossley died on 17th October 1929 at Woodlands Park, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, England. He married Jean McMurtrie in 1930 of Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland and they visited Adelaide in 1935. Muecke and Ada had no children. Francis Frederick Muecke died on 14th April 1945 in The London Hospital, England. He was survived by his wife and his three brothers Edwin Charles, Alfred Eugene, Walter Le Page and sister Amelia Caroline.
It should be noted that some sources incorrectly report that Muecke had three sisters and a brother.
