Ivor was the fourth of six children of Frederick James Hewitt (born 1863 at Muswellbrook in NSW) and Ida May Watt (born 1876 at Muswellbrook in NSW). Frederick was a Farmer at Muswellbrook, where he and Ida raised their family.

Ivor was a Farmer at Denman in Musellbrook, NSW in 1938 when he married Phyllis Evelyn Smith (born 1910 at Raymond Tce in NSW). Ivor served in the CMF and Army, enlisting on 25 September 1942 and was a Lieutenant  (Service Nos:NX137589/N671) with 12th Light Horse Regiment when he was Discharged on 20 March 1944. Brothers Frederick MacLean Hewitt (Service No:N319615), Reginald Thomas Hewitt (Service No:NX28290) and Harold Sylvester Hewitt (Service No:NX28291) also served in WWII.

Ivor and Phyllis farmed at Yarrawonga, Jerry's Plains in Denman, Muswellbrook, NSW where Ivor died in 1973. Phyllis died at Meswellbrook, NSW in 2010
