Leslie was initially rejected by the A.I.F. due to having poor teeth. He left Sydney on board HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on 16 July 1917, disembarking at Liverpool on 16 September. He went to France with the 43rd Battalion on 18 December where he served until 29 July 1919 when he was returned to Australia on H.T. Main and discharged on 6 November.
