Son of Robert Furnell Bolden and Caroline Dorothea Bolden of 'Eltham;, Bourke Street, Waverley, NSW. Brother of Horace Stanley Bolden who was killed in action at Gallipoli about the 6 August 1915 while serving with the 4th Battalion and was buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Plot 11, Row B, Grave 14.

Cyril had previously failed to pass his medical a couple of times due to heart problems but persisted as he considered it his duty to look after his younger brother Harry.
