Alan was the second of three children of Ernest Vincent Loch (born 1888 at Quirindi, NSW) and Ethel Anne McKnight (born 1896 in Bruthen, Victoria). Ernest was a Mail Driver and WWI Veteran when he married Ethel at Glenn Innes, NSW in 1920. He and Ethel Farmed at Brookley, Richmond River, NSW before relocating to Kurilpa in Brisbane, QLD in 1922. Ernest was a Milk Vendor in Brisbane, and moved the family to Kempsey, NSW in 1930 where he was a Vulcaniser (Tyre Retreader). He and Ethel moved to Bondi in 1937, where Ernest was a Salesman. Following his death in 1941, Ethel and her children relocated to Parkes in NSW.
Alan was a Fitter and Turner at Croydon Park in Parkes, NSW when he enlisted in the CMF in September 1942. He was a Gunner (Service No:N469134) attached to SFD BN Volunteer Defence Corps when he was Discharged in September 1945. Brothers-in-Law Colin Roy Butler (Corporal, Service Nos:QX57433/Q107877) and David Henry Butler (Private, Service No:QX54213) also served in WWII.
Ernest was a Fitter and Turner, living with his mother at Punchbowl, NSW when he died in 1949.
