Arthur was the second of three children of James Thomson MacDonald (born 1889 in Croydon, NSW) and Gertrude Evelyn Charlotte Piper (born 1892 in Devon, England). James (a Salesman) served with the Australian Flying Corps (2 A/M, Service No:2428) in WWI. He married Gertrude in 1917 in Perth, where they raised their family.

Arthur was working as a Cycle Maker in Perth when he enlisted in the RAN in November 1939. He served as an Ordinary Seaman and Able Seaman (Service No:22820) and was attached to HMAS Leeuwin when he was Discharged in November 1951.

Returning to Perth, Arthur worked as a Fitter's Assistant and in 1959 married Irene Babs Creswick (nee Gibbs, born 1925 in Perth, WA). They settled at Bedford in WA, where Arthur worked as a Storeman, He died in 1989 and Irene died in 2018.
