Gordon was the eldest of three children of Walter (Wally) Lindsay McDowall (born 1904 in Scotland) and Lillian Kitching (born 1903 in Ipswich, QLD). Wally arrived in Brisbane, QLD with his parents in 1910 on board the Orontes. He was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD in 1921 when he married Lillian. Wally was a keen football player and member of the Booval Swifts Footbal Team. He and Lillian settled in Ipswich where they raised their family and Wally worked as a Labourer.

Gordon enlisted in the RAN in February 1942 and was an Ordinary Seaman (Service No:B3474) on HMAS Brisbane and Kanimbla. He was promoted to Able Seaman in 1943 and was attached to HMAS Penguin when he was Discharged in March 1946. Brother Mervyn John (Sapper, Service Nos:QX60544/Q128068) also served in WWII.

Gordon died in 1948.
