Ken was the youngest of six children of Charles Harold Vivian Skewes (born 1885 in Curramulka, South Australia) and Maude Emiline Lamphee (born 1885 in Gawler, South Australia). Charles started working for the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) in 1902 as a Junior Porter at Narrogin, WA when he was 17 years of age. He was a Porter in 1912 at Northam, WA when he married Maude at Midland Junction.
