Ken was the youngest of six children of Charles Harold Vivian Skewes (born 1885 in Curramulka, South Australia) and Maude Emiline Lamphee (born 1885 in Gawler, South Australia). Charles started working for the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) in 1902 as a Junior Porter at Narrogin, WA when he was 17 years of age. He was a Porter in 1912 at Northam, WA when he married Maude at Midland Junction. Charles and Maud moved around the south west of WA as Charles was promoted within the WAGR - Night Station Master at York, Assistant Station Manager at Southern Cross and Katanning, Station Manager at Canning Vale, Mullewa, Midland Junction, Brookton, and Wagin.

Ken enlisted in the Army at Northam in WA in March 1943 and was a Private (Service No:WX39327) attached to 55 Australian Supply Depot Platoon when he was Discharged in October 1946. Brother Edward (Ed) Keith Skewes (Driver, Service No:W39390) also served in WWII.

Ken returned to Midland Junction in WA after WWII and in 1947 married Gloria Madge Cockburn (born 1923 in Brisbane, QLD). By 1949 Ken and Gloria had relocated to Brisbane, QLD where Ken worked as a Driver. In 1951 Ken and Gloria moved to Fairfield in Brisbane and Ken worked as a Floor Sander until his death in 1990. Gloria died in 1982.
