Ches was the eldest of two children of William Harold Nicholson (born 1892 in Cumberland, England) and Mary Alice Cavanagh (born 1887 in Esk, QLD). William (an Iron Ore Miner in England) was a Labourer at Toogoolawah, QLD when he married Mary in 1914. William and Mary moved briefly to Wickham in Newcastle, NSW where Ches was born in 1915, and were back in QLD by 1918.

Ches worked as a Drover at Dalby in the Maranoa region of QLD, and married Irene Mary Ellen Flanigan (born 1915 in Roma, QLD) in 1936 in Dalby. Ches was in Brisbane, QLD in April 1940 when he enlisted in the RAAF. He served as a Corporal (Service No:22145) and was attached to 3 Aircraft Depot when he was Discharged in October 1945. Brother-in-Law Thomas Herbert Flanigan (Private, Service Nos:QX63698/Q127580) also served in WWII.

Ches was on his own in 1949 and living in the Housing Area at Victoria Park in Brisbane, QLD where he was working as a Mechanic. By 1972 he was working as a Fitter and was married to  Joan Barbara Florence Lenane (a Nurse, born 1926). Ches and Joan moved to Esk in 1980, where Ches died in 1998 and Joan in 2002.
