Murray was the youngest of four children of Robert Turner (born 1873 in Edithburg, South Australia) and Olivia Webling (born at Tiparra Lighthouse near Moonta in South Australia). Robert was a Farmer in Katanning, Western Australia when he married Olivia in 1906. Robert and Olivia settled in Kattanning where they raised their family.

Murray was an Electrical Apprentice living in Perth WA in 1941 when he enlisted with the ACMF as a Private (Service No:W34231). He was a Staff Sergeant attached to 7 Army Troop Coy when he was Discharged in August 1945. Brothers Frederick (Fred) Charles (Sapper, Service No:WX19923) and Darcy Robert (Lance Corporal, Service No:WX9935, KiA New Guinea 1945) also served in WWII.

In 1947 Murray married Daisy Mary White (born 1919 in Maddington, WA). The couple settled in Perth where Murray worked as an Electirican. Following their Divorce in 1960, both remarried - Murray to Margaret Elaine Thomson (born 1931 in Albany, WA). Murray and Margaret lived in Kellerberrin, WA where Murray worked as an Electrician before relocating to Albany, WA in the mid 1970's. Margaret died in 1989, and Murray died at Murray Bridge in South Australia in 2008.
