Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Charles (Toot) Thomas was the fifth of eleven children of William John Watson (born 1884 in Heywood, Victoria) and Emma Scott (born 1883 in St Arnaud, Victoria). In 1902 William was a Labourer at Birchip in Victoria when he married Emma. They settled at Traralgon where William worked as a Carpenter.

Toot worked as a Labourer at Traralgon and in 1933 married Violet Kathleen Curran (born 1917 in Traralgon, Gippsland, Victoria). In 1942 Toot enlisted with the Australian Army, serving as a Private (Service No:VX73886). He was attached to 9 Supply Depot AASC when he was Discharged in December 1945. Two of Toot's brothers were killed in WWII - Albert (Mick) Edward (Private, Service No:VX29208) served with 2/22 Infantry Battalion and died as a PoW in New Guinea in 1942. Frederick (Dook) Henry (Private, Service No:VX29198) served with 2/24 Infantry Battalion and was KiA in Egypt in 1942.

Toot returned to Traralgon where he worked initially as a Labourer, and then as a Storeman until he retired. Toot died in 1991 and Violet in 1993.
