Jack was the eldest of five children of Herbert Watson (born 1878 in Durham, England) and Emma (Emmie) Maw (born 1880 in Durham, England). Herbert was a First Mate in the Merchant Navy when he married Emmie in Durham in 1906. In 1912, Herbert and Emmie, with their two sons, immigrated to Brisbane QLD on board the Rimutaka. Their third son was born soon after arrival in Brisbane. Herbert continued working as a Mariner until his death in 1923. Emily and her children remained in Brisbane.

Jack was a Motor Mechanic in Brisbane, QLD when he married Edna Rebie Mary Wilson (born 1907 in Brisbane, QLD). Edna was a Stenographer and died in Brisbane in 1940. 

In 1942 Jack enlisted in the RAN, serving on the HMAS Cerberus, and HMAS Rushcutter as a Motor Mechanic IV (Service No:25617). He was a Motor Mechanic III attached to HMAS Moreton when he was Discharged in July 1946.

In 1943 in Newcastle, NSW, Jack married Edith Mary Humpherson Rowland (born 1922 in Temora, NSW), and following his Discharge he and Edith settled in Brisbane, QLD where Jack worked as a Motor Mechanic/Engineer. Jack died in 1989 and Edith died in 2012.
