Charlie was the second of seven children of George William Adams (born 1874 in Yorkshire, England) and second wife Nellie Matilda Dellow (born 1891 in Leichardt, NSW). George (a Cook) arrived in Sydney, NSW in November 1897 on board the Gulf of Genoa. He was a Baker in Sydney, NSW when he married Nellie. The family lived in Sydney, St Peter's, Sydenham, Granville, Toccummwal, Werrington and Hornsby.

Charlie was a Labourer in 1935 when he married Irene Lawson (born 1914 in Ashfield, NSW). In 1939 Charlie enlisted in the Australian Army and was a Private (Service No:NX5234) with 2/4Battalion when he was Discharged in 1941. Four of his brothers also served in WWII - Keith William Jack (Gunner; Service No:N190975), Joffre Hilafred Douglas (Private; Service No:NX141894), Hilton Lawrence Arthur (Private; Service No:NX179705) and Walter George Leslie (Gunner; Service No:N274791).

Following his Divorce from Irene, Charlie was working as a Motor Driver in 1944 in Granville, NSW when he married Phoebe Emma Curwen (born 1919 in Ipswich, QLD). Charlie and Phoebe lived in Wyong, Gosford, and Woy Woy in NSW, where Charlie worked as a Motor Driver, Grocery Assistant and Instructor before becoming a Welfare Officer in the early 1960s. He died in 1991 and Phoebe in 1996.
