Enlisted for Australian Imperial Forces on 14 June 1940 at Paddington NSW. Served in the 2/17 Australian Infantry Battalion. Rank: Private. Army Number: NX54514. Embarked for overseas 27 June 1941. Wounded in action 11 Nov 1942 - Walked on a land mine at El Alamein, Egypt. Army records state that the left leg amputated at thigh due to gunshot wound, gunshot wound to right thigh and leg, palm and fingers of left hand and right heel. Amputated thumb, index finger and second joint of second finger on right hand. Disembarked from overseas on 9 Jan 1943. Discharged from the Army as medically unfit for further military service - took effect on 13 Oct 1944. In total served 1,572 full time war service days with active service in Australia 643 days and 562 days outside Australia. Issued with Australian Services Badge Number: A52743. 

After the war Eric suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
