Len was the seventh of ten children of Arthur William Howard (born 1878 in London, England) and Minnie Julie Daunton (born 1877 in London, England). Arthur served in the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman for twelve years before becoming a Cellarman. He and Minnie married in London in 1901 and lived there until immigrating to Sydney, NSW in 1913 on board the Benalla. Arthur worked as a Labourer and House Painter.

Len worked as a Labourer at Oakey in Sydney, NSW and in 1940 married Lillian Mabel Frances Cantle (born 1912 in Ipswich, QLD) in Hurstville, Sydney, NSW. Len and Lillian were living in Sydney where Len worked as a House Painter when he enlisted in the RAAF in January 1943. He served as an Aircraftman I (Service No:130306) and was attached to 5 Operational Training Unit (Staff) when he was Discharged in July 1945. Brothers Bernard Arthur (Sapper; Service No:NX86336) and Eric Cecil (Private; Service Nos:NX111261/N240219) also served in WWII.

Len and Lillian lived in Mosman, Sydney where Len worked as a House Painter before moving to Cronulla in the early 1950s. Len worked as a Stores Officer in Cronulla until he retired, then he and Lillian relocated to Caloundra, QLD. Lillian died in 1996 and Len in 1997.
