England
Flying Officer John Bartlett Bull who took pan in the raid on Sylt. is a son of Mr. A. C. Bull, of Church street, Norwood, an inspector in the Tramways. He is 27 and studied at the Adelaide High School, where he gained the Leaving certificate. Later he took a course in accountancy at the University and was employed in the Taxation Department, whence he went to the Inspector-General of Hospitals' Department for several years.
Mr Bull said last night that his son who was very happy in the Air Force, had always wanted to join. He was unable to do so here, because he was over 21, so he saved to go to England.
In 1937 he got a job as engineer on a cargo boat, and worked his passage on a long voyage, in which his ship visited many ports, to England, where he was accepted by the Air School as a junior officer in January, 1939.
In his first year at the school he won the school's junior tankard in sport. He had taken part in various sporting activities and in 1938 playcd cricket for ihe Gentlemen of Shropshire.
While in Adelaide Flying Officer Bull played cricket, baseball and football while at school, and also played amateur football for the V.M.C.A.. with which he was closely associated for a number of years. He was a prefect at the Adelaide High School.
